Johan Van Overtveldt is the most influential MEP
Johan Van Overtveldt is the most influential of all 705 MEPs this year. This is revealed in the EU Influence Index published annually. According to the international communications agency BCW, which publishes the index, as chairman of the EU Budget Committee, Johan was able to weigh in on various important economic and financial files and important legislation was adopted under his leadership. “A great honour, but then, I am here to do my job,” says Johan Van Overtveldt.
“I will not deny that this recognition is gratifying. The European Parliament does not have the best public image, and that is partly its own fault, because it often loses itself in pointless discussions and regulatory zeal. However, from the start of my mandate, I have resolved to work hard on the substance, to focus on legislative work through files within my expertise that can make a difference,” says Johan.
Common interest
“The files I follow up may not always be sexy or media-oriented, but they ultimately serve the public interest, such as reforming the financial sector so that consumers are better protected in the event of a crisis. By the way, the scope is broader than just the financial and economic aspects. I am pleased that I was able to help guide the adjustment of the European Commission’s megalomaniac climate plans.”
Policy and leadership
This is not the first time that Johan has been chosen for the EU Influence Index. He has been among the top 10 most influential MEPs several times in previous years. BCW bases the ranking on, among other things, the ability of a policymaker to influence legislation, shape the policy agenda and gain support and leadership: involvement in directing one’s own group, as well as the decisions taken by the Bureau of the Parliament.
