Assita Kanko on the EU mission concerning Afghanistan: “The Taliban regime must never be legitimised.”
The European Commission has sent a mission to Uzbekistan and Tajikistan to investigate the situation in Afghanistan. N-VA MEP Assita Kanko is also taking part in the mission. She is calling on the international community never to legitimise the Taliban regime.
“I express my deepest concern for human rights in the country, especially those of women and girls and religious and ethnic minorities. I strongly condemn the use of violence and intimidation by the Taliban, including against women, journalists and protesters. We must ensure that we can hold the Taliban accountable for violations of human rights and international law,” Assita Kanko says.
Home for terrorists
The humanitarian and security situation will be discussed during the mission as well as how the EU can best assist those most in need in Afghanistan and Afghan citizens in neighbouring countries. “We must also prevent Afghanistan from once again becoming a home for terrorist groups and stop the drug trade, which threatens to become a huge problem again under the Taliban,” Assita Kanko says.
The mission takes place from 21 to 25 February.
