Over 5,600 migrants and refugees are thought to have died on their way to Europe since early last year, according to a recent UN report. “A direct consequence of Europe’s failing migration policy,” says MEP Assita Kanko.

“There are already over 5,600 deaths in just one year. Tragic and cruel, but ultimately a direct result of Europe’s failing migration policy,” says Assita Kanko. “In fact, nothing has been done since the 2020 migration pact. Meanwhile, human traffickers continue to maintain their control, and the dead are piling up.”

Empty words

Assita Kanko asked the competent Commissioner Johansson why there has still been no progress on reception in the region. “The UK reached an agreement with Rwanda on the reception of migrants. The EU wants nothing to do with this, but they cannot offer an alternative. The answer I received to my specific question was that the EU wants to ‘respect human dignity’. Those are empty words that sound very cynical when thousands of migrants are dying in the meantime,” Assita Kanko says.
