The European Parliament has approved the setting up of a digital platform to fight crime more effectively. It enables extensive cooperation between national and international authorities in tackling terrorism and cross-border crime. MEP Assita Kanko was involved in the negotiations and is pleased with the progress on this file: “Criminals keep up with the times, so Europe must do the same.”

Criminal networks use very advanced techniques that are often difficult to detect due to their complex and innovative nature. To fight international crime effectively, authorities must take this new technological context into consideration. It must therefore be possible to exchange, store and process data adequately, and the information must be accessible to all parties involved in the investigation. “Criminals are aware of the gaps in the European approach to cross-border crime. The smooth exchange of evidence still falters too often, and thanks to this platform, that is finally changing,” says Assita Kanko, who was involved in negotiating the bill.

Joint Investigation Teams

In recent years, there has been increasing use of so-called “Joint Investigation Teams”. Courts and police from different Member States then join forces in a temporary investigation team to conduct cross-border criminal investigations together. Such teams have proven to be very effective in the fight against human trafficking, money laundering and terrorism. The most recent Joint Investigation Team was set up as part of the investigation into the war crimes in Ukraine.

Access to data is the basis of sound investigation

“Criminals undoubtedly keep up with the times, so Europe must do the same. Quick and highly secure access to crucial data across borders is the basis of sound investigation. I am pleased that Parliament recognises the need for such a high-tech platform,” Assita Kanko responds.
