Flemish Parliament ratifies Paris climate agreement

The Flemish Parliament has unanimously decided to ratify the climate agreement that was reached at the end of last year in Paris. After all, in Belgium, federal approval is not sufficient; the regions must also grant their approval. The Flemish Parliament is the first regional parliament that approves of the agreement. “However, as a party we voiced our approval a good deal earlier,” the N-VA states.

In Paris, 194 countries committed to intensifying efforts between 2020 and 2030 to further bring down greenhouse gas emissions. Those gases, which originate from industry, the energy sector, traffic, agriculture and the heating of buildings, are responsible for global warming. This results in periods of severe drought on the one hand, and an onslaught of rain and heavy storms on the other. In Paris, China and the United States also committed to efforts for the first time.

Special Climate Commission

Currently, there is already another international climate summit underway in Marrakech. Additionally, the Flemish Government is holding a second Flemish climate summit in Ghent on the 1st of December. Meanwhile, the special Climate Commission of the Flemish Parliament concluded the hearing by giving the floor to a large number of experts.

The European N-VA delegation had already also given its approval to the climate agreement in Paris. Read more about it here.
