Europe can seize criminal income faster
Today, the European Parliament voted on the Directive on Asset Recovery and Confiscation. MEP Assita Kanko participated in the negotiations. “Thanks to this Directive, criminals will no longer be able to collect millions and use that money freely. We can freeze and confiscate the revenue from crime much better and faster anywhere in Europe,” says Kanko.
Authorities will be able to identify, freeze and seize criminal profits much better and faster. That is how we dry up criminal networks and protect our society. Assita Kanko also successfully submitted amendments to increase the authorities’ operational capacity and called for stricter action against criminal infiltration into our economy.
Close loopholes in the law
The new directive will cover a wide range of crimes, such as human trafficking, drug trafficking and firearms trafficking and will close loopholes in the law by ensuring that assets can be frozen quickly, with temporary urgent freezing measures, if necessary.
Beyond our borders
“We are making investigations beyond our borders more efficient, strengthening the powers of asset recovery offices set up by Member States and ensuring the rights of victims and the security of our citizens. We continue to work against crime and for our security,” Kanko concludes.
