The European Parliament has overwhelmingly approved its position on a new directive to strengthen and sharpen the fight against child sexual abuse. MEP Assita Kanko, who helped negotiate the text as a shadow rapporteur, called the outcome a much-needed course correction to better protect children. “We owe this to every child who once stayed silent out of shame or fear. Today, we give them a voice.”

The right to speak—when the victim is ready

One of the key achievements is the extension of the statute of limitations, giving victims more time to come forward. Those who are only ready to speak out as adults will still have that opportunity. “It should not be the clock, but the victim who decides when it’s time to speak,” says Assita Kanko.

A moral and forceful response

The legal framework is being strengthened: international cooperation will improve, penalties will become more severe, and digital safety will be enhanced. The directive also ensures structural support for victims—both psychological and legal. “This isn’t about paper compromises or political colors. It’s a moral and forceful response to a crime that shatters a child’s deepest trust. Abuse no longer happens only in silence behind closed doors—it now spreads through the dark corners of the internet: in livestreams, deepfakes, and networks evolving faster than our laws can keep up.”

Upholding our most fundamental values

Kanko urges all EU member states to swiftly and fully implement the directive: “Yes, there are provisions we may disagree on. But let’s not lose sight of why we are here: to protect children. To deliver justice for victims. And to show that the European Parliament—beyond political divides, borders, or ideologies—can stand united for our most fundamental values: the safety and dignity of every child.”
