“We have thus asked the Prime Minister when and how we can expect a relaxation of the measures imposed on our society and the economy.” The N-VA is calling on the Wilmès government to get to work on an exit strategy from the coronavirus crisis in order to offer citizens and businesses a perspective on this lockdown. MPs are also calling for reflection on what the era after the coronavirus crisis should look like.

The coronavirus has been keeping the country locked up for almost a month to avoid scenes in our hospitals such as those seen in Italy. It seems that this has also succeeded: although the end of the pandemic is not yet in sight, it appears that the peak has already been reached.

Call for perspective

On top of financial breathing space and clearer rules during the crisis, the population is also asking for perspective. Austria, Norway and Denmark have already announced a relaxation of the lockdown, and in the Flemish Parliament all parties have called for the reopening of garden centres, among others, notes the N-VA: “We have thus asked the Prime Minister when and how we can expect a relaxation of the measures imposed on our society and the economy. Unfortunately, she has not given us an answer. However, there has to be light at the end of the tunnel so that everyone can prepare for the next step of solidarity: baking the cake, which can then be divided up.”

Reforms after the corona crisis in three steps

The N-VA supports this and is already focusing on the era after the corona crisis. It sees three points there:

  1. First, we have to clear up the debris caused by the crisis: “There will be many bankruptcies. The important thing is to manage that wave well so that companies can relaunch financially.”
  2. In addition, we need to think critically about our economic system. “We must ask ourselves to what extent we still want to be dependent on foreign countries, yet without falling into the trap of harmful protectionism.”
  3. Finally, we need to examine our governmental system, question sacred cows, innovate and adapt how this country works to the 21st century. “Only then will we be able to secure the future prosperity of and for everyone”, concludes the N-VA.
