Zuhal Demir on the unfair distribution of European Green Deal money: “The biggest polluters are being favoured”

“The European Green Deal favours countries that have so far invested almost nothing in a greener economy. That’s not fair.” Flemish Minister of the Environment Zuhal Demir explained on Radio 1 why Minister-President Jan Jambon sent a letter to the European Commission. In it, on behalf of the Flemish Government, he expresses his concern about the fact that Flanders is not getting any resources from the Just Transition Fund, the fund with climate money for the European Green Deal.
Hainaut gets everything
“Flanders closed its mines long ago and has already invested a great deal in a greener economy. You can’t give the largest part of the budget to the countries that are the biggest polluters,” Minister Demir said. She referred to Poland, that is getting two billion. But also to Hainaut province in Wallonia. “Belgium is getting 68 million. Hainaut is apparently going to get all that money. There is nothing fair about that.”
