Kabila not a presidential candidate: between optimism and caution

8 August 2018

The fact that Joseph Kabila is not a candidate in the Congolese presidential elections is a step in the right direction. The N-VA reacts with cautious optimism. “If Kabila had run for a third term in violation of the constitution, it would have been a slap in the face for the Congolese people and the country would now be in great turmoil.”

Caution called for

However, the N-VA believes that caution is called for. The Congolese President, Joseph Kabila, is pushing Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary to the fore as his party’s presidential candidate for the elections on 23 December. “We must not be naive. It is not beyond the realms of possibility that Kabila’s entourage will try to keep their hands firmly on the reins behind the scenes. Shadary is a confidant of Kabila and, moreover, with current European sanctions against him, no uncontroversial character,” the N-VA says.

Remaining vigilant

The N-VA also knows from experience that it is necessary to stay on its guard for possible election fraud. “We were present as an observer at the 2011 elections when many irregularities were detected. This time as well, there has been a great deal of suspicion for several months now. It is therefore crucial that the international community remains vigilant and exerts the necessary pressure on the Congolese authorities.”

A better future

Kabila has ruled without a mandate for a year and a half and there was a great deal of concern that he would not step aside but instead cling to power. In recent months, there have been many protests against Kabila hanging on, which were met with brutal violence. “The Congolese people are entitled to fair and democratic elections, and to a better future,” the N-VA concludes.
