Flemish meat is not to be trifled with

It is high time that the food sector take matters more seriously. Recent reports on meat fraud show that not all of those involved are taking our food safety seriously enough. The N-VA is displeased and dismayed concerning these scandals. “Practices like the ones that have come to light over the last few days can only be described as revolting. Flemings will not stand for their food being toyed around with,” the N-VA says.

The FASFC must do better

It’s not just the food sector that has to take its role more seriously, the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FASFC) must do so too. Checks must be more proactive, faster and more vigorous. There is also an urgent need for better communication among the regulatory bodies involved. The N-VA advocates organising the inspection services at a regional level. “Flanders has already demonstrated that it delivers good work, via the efforts of Ben Weyts, the Minister for Animal Welfare,” the N-VA continues.

Be aware of what you’re eating

The N-VA points out that the consumer also needs to be aware of what he or she is eating. “The constant pressure for lower prices and mass consumption are leading to poor quality. This has been demonstrated time and again. We are therefore advocating the so-called short chain, where you buy your meat directly from the farmer,” the N-VA explains.
