Helga Stevens, candidate for President of the European Parliament

The ECR The N-VA is a member of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), a conservative, eurorealistic parliamentary group in the European Parliament. The N-VA shares their realistic view of the European project and also advocates for the correct and intensive application of the subsidiarity principle. For example, we must not be afraid to ask ourselves if it would be better to leave certain European initiatives to the Member States. The N-VA also identifies with the emphases that the ECR places on the social-economic issues. Since the 2014 elections, the ECR has become the third largest parliamentary group in the European Parliament. ECR group, of which the N-VA is part, has put forward Helga Stevens as candidate for President of the European Parliament. “I want to show that it is possible to be a President of the European Parliament who represents and unites the whole assembly and all MEPs,” Helga Stevens says. “Europe is big and diverse, and that diversity must be expressed much more strongly in the Parliament. Furthermore, every MEP from every country must be of equal value.
“In the last few years, I have seen how all important decisions are taken behind closed doors by a small group of men from a small number of countries,” Helga Stevens explains. “The Parliament must to a much greater extent have as its ambition to be truly open, transparent and efficient, and by so doing better reach all citizens in the EU.”
Uniting role
Helga Stevens is determined to take on a uniting role: “I have proved that it is possible to break through glass ceilings, overcome setbacks and bring together people from different backgrounds.”
Whoever ends up being President will need to have the support of a majority of the 751 MEPs. The election will take place in January.
