Flemish Minister-President wants North Sea Union

Flemish Minister-President Geert Bourgeois calls for the establishment of a North Sea Union, following the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), a partnership of the EU with fifteen non-EU countries around the Mediterranean Sea.
As far as Geert Bourgeois is concerned, the North Sea Union will be a partnership of all countries around the North Sea. He is initially thinking of the Netherlands, France and Great Britain, but he also welcomes countries located more to the North such as Germany and Denmark. The direct reason for the ambitious proposal is the announcement of Brexit. In Ostend, the Minister-President recently expressed his hope that joint scientific programmes around research in the North Sea between Great Britain and other North Sea countries would not be influenced by the British leaving the European Union.
