No export of weapons from Flanders to Saudi-Arabia
The Flemish Prime Minister Geert Bourgeois has refused a permit for delivery of military equipment to Saudi-Arabia. The refusal is based on the country's involvement in the war in Yemen. By doing so the Flemish Government unequivocally shoulders its responsibility. Bourgeois makes word good with deed, and shows that exporting weapons to Saudi-Arabia is not acceptable under the current circumstances.
At the moment, no European or international weapons embargo applies against Saudi-Arabia; however, the Flemish Government makes decisions on a case by case basis. In 2015, there were no applications for weapons exports to Saudi-Arabia. The issue presented at the beginning of January involved a request of export of military clothing. "We refused that application based on the involvement of Saudi-Arabia in the war in Yemen," stated Prime Minister Bourgeois.
