Federal government opens talks with Engie on takeover of nuclear power plants
The federal government has entered into exclusive negotiations with Engie over a potential takeover of all nuclear activities in Belgium. “Pending the outcome, all decommissioning work will be halted with immediate effect,” confirmed Prime Minister Bart De Wever.
The proposed deal is far-reaching. It covers Belgium’s entire nuclear fleet, including seven reactors, the workforce, all nuclear subsidiaries, and all related assets and liabilities—along with obligations tied to decommissioning and shutdown.
A strategic decision
This move reflects the federal government’s strategic choice to acquire the country’s nuclear assets itself, in line with its ambition to extend the lifespan of existing reactors and develop new nuclear capacity in Belgium.
“This government is choosing reliable, affordable and sustainable energy—less dependent on fossil fuel imports and with greater control over our own supply,” said Bart De Wever.
Negotiations running through autumn 2026
In the coming months, the government will carry out a thorough due diligence review of all nuclear activities. The parties aim to agree on the key terms and conditions by 1 October 2026. In the meantime, decommissioning work will be temporarily suspended.
No binding agreement has been reached at this stage. The final decision will depend on further negotiations, as well as the required regulatory approvals and agreements from third parties.
