This week, the fourth and oldest nuclear reactor in Tihange was shut down. According to Member of Parliament Bert Wollants, the move reflects a complete lack of preparation and long-term vision by the De Croo government. “It’s deeply regrettable,” says Wollants. “If it were up to N-VA, this closure would be reversed as soon as possible.”

“Shutting down our nuclear capacity will lead to higher CO₂ emissions and a more unstable and uncertain energy supply. That has serious consequences for our industry and economy,” explains Bert Wollants.

Talks with the Operator

During a session of the parliamentary Energy Committee, Wollants questioned the minister responsible about the possibility of extending Tihange 1’s operational lifetime. He urged the government to start talks with the operator without delay.

“Once the operator begins unloading the fuel and preparing for dismantling, it becomes increasingly difficult to turn back,” Wollants warned. “That’s why we’re asking that no irreversible steps be taken until there is clarity on a possible lifetime extension and the government is able to make a well-informed decision.”

“We welcome Minister Philippe Bihet’s initiative to enter into discreet talks with the operator and his request to put the dismantling process on hold until more clarity is available regarding a potential extension,” Wollants concluded.
