Van Bossuyt: “Essential to limit inflow and increase outflow”

Federal Minister for Asylum and Migration Anneleen Van Bossuyt attended her first European Council of Ministers on Asylum and Migration—an environment that felt familiar to her as a former MEP. “A European return policy is not optional, but a necessity. We must work with international partners and focus on expanding return initiatives.”
Outdated European return policy
During the ministerial meeting, Van Bossuyt engaged with colleagues from other European countries. She noted a growing realization at the European level that the current return policy is outdated. “When there is political will, things can move quickly. But the necessary steps in the decision-making process must be followed. In the meantime, we must work pragmatically within the existing framework.”
In Belgium, however, the asylum system remains in crisis. “We are still seeing record numbers in our country. It is crucial to limit the inflow and increase the outflow,” Van Bossuyt stressed.
Innovative solutions within the legal framework
To tackle the asylum crisis, Van Bossuyt advocates for breaking taboos and embracing innovative solutions within the existing legal framework. “There is a lot that can be done within the current rules if they are stretched to their full potential.”
The minister announced a package of crisis measures aimed at reducing inflow. “Anyone who has read the federal coalition agreement will not be surprised by these measures. We intend to tighten regulations on family reunification and social assistance, among other areas.”
