The Ukrainian term “Holodomor” refers to the extermination of peasants by starvation that took place in Ukraine 90 years ago by the communist regime in the Soviet Union. It is considered one of the biggest disasters in Ukrainian history. The majority parties in the Flemish Parliament now want to recognise that event as genocide. They have written this in a resolution that was approved in Parliament.

Various historians estimate that several million Ukrainians died in the Holodomor. The famine came about as a result of the Stalin regime. “It is one of the cruellest crimes in history. Millions of Ukrainians died of starvation and deprivation. Ukrainians were deported and persecuted. Research shows that the famine resulted from a deliberate policy of the Soviet communist regime. Recognition as genocide is therefore essential and logical,” states initiator and MP Sofie Joosen.

Respect

Orry Van de Wauwer (CD&V party): “This also expresses our respect for the Ukrainian people, who suffered from this tragedy. This recognition is particularly important for survivors and family members or relatives of the victims. Not only in our Flemish Parliament, but also by other institutions and partners.”

Research is still needed

Flemish MP Bart Tommelein (Open Vld party) is also asking former Soviet republics to open up their archives on the Holodomor. “Extensive research into the events of 90 years ago is still needed. The causes and effects must be fully uncovered. That is why thorough research is necessary,” he says.

Emphasise Ukraine’s sovereignty

The initiators also want to reaffirm and emphasise Ukraine’s sovereignty through this text. “Ukraine has the historical right to a sovereign existence, free from Russian interference. Ukrainians have the right to determine their own future,” Bart Tommelein concludes.
