Women quota not a solution for N-VA

30 June 2011

The N-VA tabled five amendments in the Senate with regard to the bill on the mandatory quota for women in the governing boards of both state-managed and private companies. With these amendments, the N-VA showed it is prepared to introduce quotas in state companies because they can fulfil an exemplary function. But having the same preoccupation in boards of private companies remains a step too far, as far as the N-VA is concerned. The N-VA remains convinced of the fact that such a quota would not be a solution for the structural problems that are still causing the 'glass ceiling' today. Furthermore, they are insulting to many women who build up a career on their own initiative. The N-VA, on the other hand, is advocating a real equal opportunities policy that must guarantee equal access to all jobs for women and men. The N-VA is also concerned that this blatant intervention of the government at the heart of private companies will be detrimental to investments in our country.
