With more than one million votes, the N-VA remains the largest people’s party in Flanders
On the evening of Sunday 9 June, the N-VA was the big surprise of the elections in Flanders. Despite opinion polls always predicting a loss for the Flemish nationalist party in recent years, many times estimating the share at less than 20%, the N-VA held up very well. Better yet, it grew in both votes and percentage for the Chamber of Representatives.
In Flanders, the N-VA held up well (23.9%)
The N-VA is the only party that has the confidence of more than a million voters for the Flemish Parliament (1,045,950 voters). Although all the coalition partners of the Flemish Jambon government have losses, the N-VA holds up best with 23.9% and loses the least in percentage points (-0.9%). The Open Vld party has the biggest loss (-4.8%), the second-biggest loser for the Flemish Parliament elections is the opposition party Groen (-2.8%) and only after that comes the cd&v party (-2.4%).
For the Chamber, there is even growth (25.8%)
The N-VA is also the only party to convince more than a million voters for the federal Chamber of Representatives, with 1,167,061 votes. Within the Flemish Region, the N-VA Chamber lists obtain 25.8% of the votes. That is a modest gain of 0.2%. Open Vld, Prime Minister De Croo’s party, started the federal Vivaldi government as the seventh-largest party and is now only the ninth-largest party in this kingdom. At the national level, the extreme right party (Vlaams Belang, VB) is the second-largest and the communists (PVDA-PTB) the fourth-largest party in Belgium.
The N-VA holds its ground in all provinces
Given the demotivating opinion polls and the discouraging comments of opinion leaders, the N-VA’s score is particularly surprising, especially since all the N-VA candidate lists in all the provinces achieve more than 20%, while the VB party in Flemish Brabant remains stuck at around 17%. An absolute outlier is the result for the Antwerp Chamber N-VA party list led by Bart De Wever, which rises above the symbolic threshold of 30%. No other party achieves such a result.
The N-VA retains its European seats
The N-VA’s result for the European Parliament elections remained stable. The N-VA’s European list received the confidence of 995,868 voters, thus ending up just under a million voters. Johan Van Overtveldt, Assita Kanko and Kris Van Dijck will sit in the European Parliament. The N-VA remains a member of the ECR The N-VA is a member of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), a conservative, eurorealistic parliamentary group in the European Parliament. The N-VA shares their realistic view of the European project and also advocates for the correct and intensive application of the subsidiarity principle. For example, we must not be afraid to ask ourselves if it would be better to leave certain European initiatives to the Member States. The N-VA also identifies with the emphases that the ECR places on the social-economic issues. Since the 2014 elections, the ECR has become the third largest parliamentary group in the European Parliament. ECR Group.
First anchoring in Wallonia
The N-VA also submitted complete lists for the federal elections in all the Walloon provinces. No Walloon seat was won, but with more than 40000 votes, the N-VA has now put itself on the Walloon map.
