Uniform European approach to traffic safety

21 June 2011

Last week, the European Parliament Transport Committee visited the Euregio Maas-Rhine. N-VA Member of the European Parliament, Frieda Brepoels, was one of the driving forces behind this visit. The challenges for cross-border public transport were discussed extensively, as was the police collaboration between Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. Brepoels: “The police corps are confronted with the lack of coordination between national legislations every day. Punishment for one and the same violation, for example, differs greatly among the various Member States.” In the meantime, the European Parliament Transport Committee called on the European Commission today to come up with a strong plan of action to improve safety on European roads. For example, the Parliament wants a European alcohol limit, mandatory alcohol locks in new commercial vehicles and a voluntary eye test for people over the age of 65. Brepoels welcomes the fact that wearing fluorescent jackets and helmets is not mandatory for cyclists because this measure could discourage people from using bicycles.
