Unfair levy on electricity
Currently, Flemish companies which take measures to reduce energy consumption are rewarded by the Flemish authorities for their efforts. However, strangely enough the Belgian “federal electricity contribution” makes it so that these same efforts are also punished at the financial level. In fact, the cap placed on the federal electricity contribution actually encourages companies to consume more energy. This is because only those companies which use more than 250,000 MWh benefit from the capped amount of EUR 250,000 and those which use just a bit less pay the full price, which can amount to more than twice the capped amount. Basically, this means that efforts to save energy which are rewarded by the Flemish authorities are punished financially by the federal levy. This is yet another example of why it is so important for Flanders to have complete control over its own energy policies.
