Three Communities speak with one voice: radio must remain standard in new cars

The Flemish, French-speaking and German-speaking Communities have reached a joint position on radio reception in new cars. Belgium will therefore advocate during the European negotiations on the Digital Networks Act for preserving radio reception in new vehicles, ensuring that drivers do not become solely dependent on internet radio and streaming services.

“The car must not become a closed streaming platform. People who want to listen to the radio while driving should be able to do so directly: without a subscription, without using mobile data and without having to search through countless apps. That is why it is important that our three Communities speak with one voice: radio must remain available in new cars,” say Flemish Minister for Media Cieltje Van Achter, French-speaking Minister for Media Jacqueline Galant and German-speaking Minister for Media Gregor Freches.

Radio remains an important medium on the road

The car remains an important place for listening to the radio. Around 17% of all radio listening in Flanders takes place while people are travelling. The figure is similar in Wallonia. Radio is also an important and highly trusted source of news. Direct over-the-air reception works without a mobile connection and ensures that local radio stations remain accessible.

Streaming must not replace radio

“Technological progress should give listeners more choice, not less. Streaming is a valuable addition, but it must not replace free and direct access to radio. Radio should also remain easily accessible from the dashboard,” concludes Cieltje Van Achter.
