N-VA chairman Bart De Wever sees little or nothing that makes him happy in the budget agreement that the Vivaldi coalition proposed on Tuesday. “The working middle class can pay for inactivity that is rewarded instead of being tackled,” chairman Bart De Wever said in the De Wereld Vandaag programme on Radio 1.

According to Bart De Wever, the Vivaldi government budget is anecdotal and based on air. “The working middle class will have to pay the bill. Today there are no reforms in favour of people who work. Inactive people are the big winners. How is job growth supposed to come out of that?”

A trio of extra costs

Bart De Wever also has serious reservations about extending the social energy tariff for two million Belgians. “What about the other eight million Belgians? They get a trio of extra costs: their own bills go up, they have to pay more for Social security Social security is currently managed at the Federal level in Belgium. The most important pillars of Belgian social security are: sickness and invalidity insurance (NIDHI), pensions, unemployment insurance and child allowances. In addition, occupational illness, occupational accidents and annual holidays are dealt with at this level. Some Flemish parties have been campaigning for years for (large parts of) social security to be transferred to the Regions and Communities. social security contributions and they have to pay that EUR 80 cheque yet again. And what do they get in return? A discount of EUR 1.5 per month. You shouldn’t make a laughing stock of people.”

Flanders: on the way to balance in one night; federally: theatrics, fighting and taxes

Bart De Wever compared the laborious way in which the budget agreement was reached with how the Flemish Government has done it. “The Flemish Government met for one night and is on its way to a balance. Here we see theatrics and fighting and we mainly get taxes.”
