Theo Francken was elected Vice-President of NATO’s Parliamentary Assembly

9 October 2023

MP and our country’s head of our delegation, Theo Francken, was elected a Vice-President during the annual meeting of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Copenhagen. He has been a member of the Chamber since 2010. This is the first time in 73 years that a Fleming is taking up this position. “It is a great honour to be able to participate in this work from the front row,” Francken says.

An anniversary full of concerns

The Parliamentary Assembly of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO PA) was founded in 1955. It is an interparliamentary consultative body with hundreds of representatives from NATO Member States and partner countries. This body functions as NATO’s watchdog. It monitors NATO’s democratic principles and military doctrine and strives for transparent policies. It issues annual reports on the Alliance’s security matters.

“Our Alliance will celebrate its 75th anniversary next year. It is an anniversary full of concerns because the West is under increasing pressure. The war in Europe, increasing tensions in the Balkans and the Caucasus and a new war in the Middle East make one thing clear: we urgently need to increase our resilience,” says Francken.
