Theo Francken: “Rather new elections than a Flemish minority government”

MP Theo Francken discussed the ongoing federal coalition talks on the De Afspraak news show on the Flemish TV channel VRT. “We are in extraordinary circumstances with a coronavirus crisis and an economic crisis. If you then have to make difficult decisions, with Flanders contributing the most, you need democratic legitimacy in Flanders, don’t you? Theo Francken expects that ignoring the Flemish vote will have consequences in 2024.

Call for the Australian model against illegal migration

De Afspraak also covered other issues, such as the migration crisis, which is once again a hot topic following the fires in the Greek refugee camps. MP Theo Francken does not expect the European Member States to reach an agreement. “What is needed is to combat illegal migration and human trafficking. We can only succeed in this if we clearly say, as we have already seen Australia do, that if you come to Europe illegally, you can never come back to Europe legally. This is the only way to destroy the business model of the human traffickers.”
