MP Theo Francken was today appointed by the NATO Parliament as rapporteur for the Middle East and the Mediterranean. That means he can coordinate meetings on the region and will have an important voice in the NATO debate on the area. Turkey’s dissenting vote was notable; however, it was insufficient to stop the appointment.

Theo Francken stated that he is delighted with the important and interesting position: “migration, energy, extremism, food security, smuggling, economic cooperation... NATO has so many interests in the Middle East and the Mediterranean. A stable southern border is crucial for the future of our Western alliance.
