The NMBS will recognise the European Disability Card

18 January 2021

The European Disability Card (EDC) will be included in the NMBS’s new management contract. This was the answer the Minister of Mobility gave in the Chamber of Representatives to a question from the N-VA. “We are delighted to hear that the hundreds of thousands of people who use this card will now also be able to use the EDC card on the train.”

According to the Minister’s figures, more than 200,000 people have an EDC card. This card can already be used in several European countries with a wide range of public services and may also soon be used with our national railway company as a basis for granting a discounted rate. Negotiations for a new management contract between the NMBS and the Federal State will start soon. The EDC may also have a place at the negotiating table.

More accessible stations

The government’s ambition is to make a great many stations more accessible to people with reduced mobility. “Of course, there are also a large number of people who have no visible disability, and with this EDC they too can make themselves known to the NMBS to be entitled to assistance and a concession,” the N-VA concludes.
