The N-VA wants guarantees for a secure 5G network

The Belgian security services have major concerns about the protection of the future 5G network, an answer to a parliamentary question from the N-VA shows. The N-VA is requesting guarantees for a secure network. “We are counting on support across party lines in this regard,” is the message.
5G is the telecommunications technology of the future and it offers much more than super-fast internet. Thanks to the 5G network, hundreds of millions of devices will be connected to the internet and to each other. It will result in the logistics sector, the medical world, factories and production processes looking very different. As a result, the impact on our society and our economy will be particularly significant.
Security warning
From the answer of the competent minister, it appears that for the first time the Belgian security services are advising protection level 4 for the roll-out of the 5G network, which means that there would be a limitation put on telecommunication providers regarding the use of equipment from non-reliable suppliers. “We have to take the advice of the security services seriously. This is a clear wake-up call that requires urgent action. That is why in the coming weeks we will work on a legislative framework that allows the recommendations to be implemented. We want watertight guarantees for a secure 5G network,” says the N-VA.
Action needed fast
“With Brussels as the seat of various European institutions and NATO, it is also important to guarantee information security in the capital. But our port cities must also be protected more. We are therefore making a call across party lines to work with us constructively given that it is a question of protecting national security and the sovereignty of Belgium,” the N-VA concludes.
