The N-VA wants electronic information about pensioners living abroad to be exchanged

15 March 2011

The Belgian National Pension Office (RVP/ONP) makes payments to 180,000 people who live abroad, for a total amount of €64 million each month. Most people entitled to a pension from the Belgian State live in Italy (40,920), France (38,234), Spain (20,067) and the Netherlands (19,097). Each year the RVP/ONP checks whether pensioners living abroad are still alive by sending them a form they have to complete. Those who do not reply no longer receive their pension. The N-VA doesn't think that this archaic process is appropriate in today’s increasingly international society. Social security Social security is currently managed at the Federal level in Belgium. The most important pillars of Belgian social security are: sickness and invalidity insurance (NIDHI), pensions, unemployment insurance and child allowances. In addition, occupational illness, occupational accidents and annual holidays are dealt with at this level. Some Flemish parties have been campaigning for years for (large parts of) social security to be transferred to the Regions and Communities. Social security organisations in Europe, at any rate, should definitely make use of electronic data exchange. This will result in a more transparent management of social security resources and will prevent errors and fraud.
