The N-VA is calling for concrete support measures for the Belarusian population

13 January 2021

The Flemish Parliament wants to draw more attention to the ongoing human rights violations in Belarus through a resolution. The N-VA is calling for effective actions at the European and international levels to support the Belarusian population in their legitimate fight for a stronger democratic state based on the rule of law.

Since the presidential elections in the summer of 2020, the situation in Belarus remains very tense. Alexander Lukashenko namely proclaimed himself president after election fraud. Since his appointment, many Belarusians have taken to the streets every week, and these protests have been accompanied by a crackdown by the security forces and the imprisonment of over 30,000 opposition members.

Europe looks on passively

“After a few months, the media storm has subsided, but today we see that very few things have actually improved for the Belarusian population,” the N-VA says. “We are deeply concerned about the way in which human rights and the right to self-determination of the Belarusian people are being handled on the European mainland, while we in the European Union stand idly by.”

Flanders takes the lead

“That is why we are now asking the European Union to support the Belarusian population and take strong action against the human rights violations. We can take the lead in this from within Flanders and continue to press internationally for independent observers and free elections in Belarus,” the N-VA concludes.
