The N-VA is calling for action against Turkish attacks in Kurdistan

15 July 2020

In a letter addressed to the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, the N-VA group in the Flemish Parliament is requesting that more European attention be paid to the appalling situation in northern Syria and Iraq. “We must not stand idly by and watch while Kurdish men, women and children are once again the targets of dreadful Turkish atrocities. That is why we are now calling for the European Commission to take action.”

Turkish crimes against Kurds not to be accepted

Since the autumn of 2019, Turkish President Erdoğan has regularly carried out airstrikes on Kurdish settlements in Iraq and Syria. Under the guise of fighting terrorism, several civilians were killed. Once again, the Kurds became targets of terrible war crimes, just when they were in need of stability and recovery. “Our group in the Flemish Parliament feels a connection with the Kurds. After the various Turkish bombardments in recent weeks, the situation has now escalated to a sad climax,” the N-VA says. “The Turkish President is also taking advantage of the COVID-19 crisis to remove and imprison democratically elected mayors in Kurdistan. Our European values compel us not to tolerate these crimes any longer.”

Turkey should no longer be a candidate country for EU membership

The N-VA drafted a letter for the High Representative for Foreign Policy of the European Union, Josep Borrell. “In this letter, we are requesting that all possible actions be taken to stop the Turkish attacks on Kurdish territory and to respect the Kurdish right of self-determination. In our view, the situation also necessitates putting an end to Turkey’s status as a candidate country for EU membership.”
