The N-VA disapproves of De Croo’s opposition to the proposal for return hubs outside the EU

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen supports the Italian proposal to establish European return hubs outside the European Union. She wrote this in a letter to the European heads of government, who are meeting for a European summit. Outgoing Prime Minister Alexander De Croo (Open Vld party) stated that he would not support the proposal after objections from the PS, Groen and Ecolo parties in the Council of Ministers. “Unprecedented and unconstitutional,” says the N-VA.

The current outgoing federal government no longer has a majority in the Chamber of Representatives. It is under the constitutional obligation to handle current issues, says MP Maaike De Vreese. “The Prime Minister seems to have forgotten that. Instead of exercising due restraint by abstaining, he is taking a pronounced stance here with far-reaching political consequences. Moreover, it goes against the direction that the incoming Arizona coalition wants to take in Europe. This explicitly includes a stronger European border and return policy as an important element.”
