Rental vehicles can no longer be permitted to be anonymous weapons

3 November 2017

The attack with a rented truck in New York last week is - after Nice, Berlin, Barcelona and London - the latest in line that extends far too long already. That’s why it’s important for companies that rent, lease or share vehicles to provide information on who is driving which vehicle when to the “crossroads database of vehicles”.

“There has to be a possibility for an alarm to signal when a suspected terrorist, a relative of a suspected terrorist or another criminal rents a vehicle,” the N-VA says.

To prevent terror, it is first and foremost important for the existing rules in this regard to be complied with; however, the N-VA is also advocating a tightening of the legislation. “We have got to do everything possible to make sure that the cracks in the system are sealed all the more tightly. Allowing the anonymity of rental vehicle drivers is an absolute no-no if we want to avoid attacks like the one in New York.”
