Nationalism is triumphing

6 May 2011

Nationalism in Scotland and the Basque Country is currently experiencing remarkable triumphs. Hot on the heels of the terrific results of the Catalan independence referendum at the beginning of April, the Scottish National Party (SNP) thundered home with an absolute majority in recent regional elections. Frieda Brepoels, Member of the European Parliament for the N-VA, reacted with particular enthusiasm: “There is no doubt that this victory can be considered as a historical one. The fact that voters lent their support to the outgoing SNP government in such huge numbers is the ultimate proof that the recipe works.” The lifting of the ban on the Basque party, Bildu, participating in Spanish municipal elections is also good news. “Taking part in free and fair elections is a fundamental right. Our actions and those of the Basque Friendship Group in the European Parliament represented a great support for the Basques. Hopefully the Basque Country can now continue its route to sustainable peace unhindered,” Frieda Brepoels concluded.
