N-VA sees to tightening of fast-track to citizenship law (snel-Belgwet)

The possibility to obtain Belgian citizenship via the federal parliament was originally intended to be exceptional in nature and only for select individuals. However, over the years this became more and more of a standard practice, with all the associated opaqueness and behind-the-scenes lobbying work. Further to this, the N-VA was the first party to submit a detailed proposal for a law which would tighten the requirements for obtaining Belgian citizenship. From now on, only a person who behaves in the manner of a “good citizen” will be eligible for naturalisation by parliament. This means that the applicant will have to be able to show that he or she is well-integrated in community life, which among other things includes making efforts to speak the language of the place of residence. Moreover, the person will have to actively contribute to society and exhibit proper behaviour, so anyone committing or found guilty of Social security Social security is currently managed at the Federal level in Belgium. The most important pillars of Belgian social security are: sickness and invalidity insurance (NIDHI), pensions, unemployment insurance and child allowances. In addition, occupational illness, occupational accidents and annual holidays are dealt with at this level. Some Flemish parties have been campaigning for years for (large parts of) social security to be transferred to the Regions and Communities. social security fraud will not qualify.
