N-VA receives European support for its opposition to forced labour

The European Parliament massively supported a report by MEP Helga Stevens, in which she supports the European Council’s decision to have all the EU Member States rapidly adopt a new protocol of the International Labour Organisation (ILO). This protocol must protect employees from misleading selection and recruitment practices. “Almost a million people in Europe still perform forced labour. This is unacceptable,” Stevens says.

“The original convention on forced labour is almost one hundred years old,” she concludes. The ratification of the new ILO protocol would mean an important step forward in the fight against forced labour. “Nowadays there are more than 21 million victims of forced labour worldwide, generating 150 million dollars of illegal profit. Europe must take the lead and crack down on these abuses,” Stevens concludes.
