N-VA counts on broad consensus for intervention in Syria

La N-VA compte sur un large consensus pour une intervention en Syrie

The N-VA supports the Belgian government’s plan to possibly conduct a military intervention in Syria. The American minister of Defence has requested our country’s assistance. Until now, Belgium was only active in Iraq, but starting from July, the government also wishes to fight IS in Syria.

“As far as we are concerned, an intervention is only possible within an international framework. The intention is to find a broader consensus on this in the parliament,” party leader Peter De Roover says. “Only then can our military aircraft return to the Middle East this summer. However, the final decision must be made by the government.”

The IS structure must be eliminated militarily, but bombardments alone are not enough. Local allies also play a role that must not be underestimated. “And if we wish to avoid mistakes made in the past, then the diplomatic and humanitarian aspects must also be filled in,” Peter De Roover concludes.
