N-VA condemns hard crackdown on democratic protest in Turkey

13 June 2013

Turkey is in a state of uproar due to the hard-handed approach taken by the Erdoğan government to disperse the protest demonstrations of its citizens. Today the European Parliament adopted a resolution on this topic, stating that Turkish Prime Minister Erdoğan should take a conciliatory approach and that charges should be brought against the person responsible for the police violence. The Parliament also criticised the lack of media freedom in Turkey. Prior to this, the N-VA had already urged the Federal Government to include these disturbances in its further negotiation talks with Turkey since the hard-line approach to the demonstrations is unacceptable for a prospective Member State.
