N-VA calls for a parliamentary Brexit marathon

“The chance that we will see a hard Brexit on 29 March is greater than ever. As a country, we must be prepared for the worst.” The N-VA is calling for a parliamentary Brexit week. It is doing so after the British House of Commons rejected the Brexit deal between the European Union and the United Kingdom on Tuesday.

Absolute priority

The N-VA wants to give absolute priority to the Brexit with all parliamentary commissions. “The goal of such a five-day Brexit marathon is to go over precisely per commission with the competent Ministers for all departments which problems will arise and which measures must be ready. We often don’t stop to think about it, but Europe took care of so many aspects in the relationship between our two countries. Not taking them into account will confront citizens and companies unnecessarily with the hard consequences of an uncontrolled Brexit,” the N-VA says.

Parliament necessary

The N-VA considers the Brexit to be an urgent affair with the highest priority, and the outgoing government can and must take measures. “Brexit must be given the highest priority, not only in the government, but also in the Parliament. Flanders is already ready with its exercise, the outgoing government is now hard at work mapping out what still has to be adapted if the British leave us without an exit deal. The N-VA wishes to help work on this in all transparency. The minority government needs the Parliament in order to bring this mammoth task to a good conclusion,” says the N-VA.

Federal reaction speed

Finally, the N-VA emphasises that this process has to happen in all openness with the states: “Tackling the Brexit chaos is not an exclusively federal matter. It is the task of this outgoing government to inform the states at all times and to involve them in the process. For many measures that they want to implement, success depends on the federal reaction speed. Transparency towards everything and everyone is the code word now more than ever,” the N-VA concludes.
