The N-VA, together with other Arizona coalition parties, has submitted a resolution condemning the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and calling for a renewed push toward peace in the Middle East.
“The human suffering and atrocities in Gaza are unbearable. We urge our government to urgently and resolutely support renewed peace negotiations,” said Member of Parliament Kathleen Depoorter, co-signer of the resolution.

The loss of life is staggering. Thousands of women and children have already perished. Israeli families are living in agony, unsure of the fate of their loved ones held hostage. Even aid workers have not been spared from the violence.

Tensions in the region, already simmering for years, have escalated dramatically following the brutal attacks by Hamas on Israeli civilians on October 7, 2023.

Humanitarian Obligations

“We fully recognize Israel’s right to defend itself against this ruthless terrorism. But that does not negate the obligations enshrined in international humanitarian law. Humanitarian aid must never, under any circumstance, be up for debate. We urgently call on Israel to resume the supply of food, electricity, and other vital humanitarian goods,” Depoorter added.

The Role of the Palestinian Authority

The resolution also highlights the responsibility of the Palestinian Authority. “The violent ousting of the Palestinian Authority from Gaza by Hamas in 2005, and the resulting lack of proper governance, have derailed prospects for a two-state solution. We are urging the Palestinian Authority to carry out reforms that guarantee financial accountability and democratic legitimacy, and to dismantle terrorist organizations.”

Clear Demands for the Federal Government

The resolution includes specific appeals to Belgium’s federal government. “We deliberately crafted a text that holds both parties accountable. Our country must play an active role in the search for lasting peace,” Depoorter emphasized.

Support for the Macron Plan

The majority parties express their full support for the peace initiative launched by French President Emmanuel Macron and Saudi Arabia, which aims at the eventual recognition of a Palestinian state. However, recognition can only follow once several crucial conditions are met: the release of all hostages, the dismantling of Hamas, the election of a democratically legitimate Palestinian leadership, clearly defined borders, and the recognition of Israel by the Arab world.

Strong European support

As laid out in the coalition agreement, Belgium is also committed to building strong European consensus on the most pressing issues. Only through a united, consistent approach can we truly make a difference.

The resolution will be submitted for urgent debate during Thursday’s plenary session in the Chamber and could be adopted ahead of the upcoming UN summit on Gaza in June. “This would allow our government to attend the summit with a clear, broadly supported humanitarian position,” Depoorter concluded.
