The Restorers, the group of five Kenyan students who developed an app to combat female genital mutilation, has secured its position in the final for the 2019 Sakharov Prize. Our MEP Assita Kanko had nominated the students yesterday for the prestigious prize for freedom of thought. And successfully so, it turns out. Assita Kanko is very happy with the position in the final: “The Sakharov Prize can provide a huge boost to the emancipation of an enormous group of girls and encourage similar initiatives.”

Support and admiration

The five Kenyan students developed the app I-Cut. With it, girls in danger of becoming the victim of genital mutilation can gain quick access to assistance. Assita Kanko, herself a victim of the horror of genital mutilation, nominated The Restorers for the Sakharov Prize on Tuesday. “I am especially happy that my group supported my nomination and also that I found enough support among the other groups as well. These brave girls deserve every support and admiration,” Assita Kanko reacts gratefully.
