Jan Jambon advocates a united and strong Europe against Turkey

10 October 2019

Flemish Minister-President Jan Jambon is calling on Europe to react in a united and strong manner to the Turkish assault in Syria. In a conversation with the newspaper De Ochtend, he advocates economic sanctions against Turkey. Jan Jambon fears that the war violence will lead to the escape of Syrian fighters from Kurdish camps. “They are ticking time bombs,” Jan Jambon says about the matter.

Economic sanctions

“Europe must now demonstrate that it is relevant on the international playing field.” According to Minister-President Jambon, Europe has interests in the conflict, with among others the European Syrian fighters who risk falling beyond any form of control. “In the first place, we must make urgent work of economic sanctions against Turkey to get Erdogan to change his tune,” he said on the radio.

Power block

In addition, he expects our NATO allies to call the important member that Turkey is to order. Flanders itself cannot achieve very much on its own, Jan Jambon says realistically. “If we close our Turkish agency of Flanders Invest and Trade, it will amount to basically nothing. You have to set up a power block against a powerful country like Turkey: Europe.”
