Government donates minesweeper to Ukraine: “A powerful signal of international solidarity”

In a solemn ceremony held in Zeebrugge, the federal government officially handed over the minesweeper Narcis to Ukraine. At the same time, the Netherlands donated its sister ship, Vlaardingen. Together, the two naval vessels form the core of a joint effort to strengthen Ukraine’s navy.
Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken and his Dutch counterpart Ruben Brekelmans were present at the handover. The donation is part of the Maritime Capability Coalition (MCC), an alliance of 17 countries working together to build a NATO-interoperable Ukrainian navy by 2035.
More than just a material contribution
Minister Francken underlined the broader significance of the gesture: “Ukraine’s struggle is also a fight for our own security. By bolstering Ukraine’s navy, we’re helping the country defend itself while contributing to stability in the Black Sea region.”
For Francken, the donation goes far beyond symbolism. “This sends a clear message: Ukraine is not alone. We are actively supporting the rebuilding of its defence capabilities—at sea as well.”
“With this step, we reaffirm our role as a reliable ally in international defence cooperation and our continued commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty,” Francken concluded.
