Freezing EU support for Turkey

28 March 2018

The pre-accession support for Turkey must be frozen. Turkey is getting over nine billion euros from the European Union between 2007 and 2020. That money is intended to bring the rule of law in Turkey to the EU level. But Turkey is moving in the opposite direction. The N-VA wants Flanders to continue to advocate freezing the financial support. “It is revolting that nine billion euros are being squandered in this way and it calls for action to be taken. Turkey is moving further and further from everything we stand for in Europe,” the N-VA says.

No place in the EU

Flemish Minister-President Geert Bourgeois confirmed that Flanders will advocate that the pre-accession support is frozen. In the light of the humanitarian crisis in Afrin, which was recently attacked by Turkey, Flemish Minister-President Geert Bourgeois emphasised that Turkey currently does not have any future in the EU.
