Francken emphasizes importance of economic return in Franco-Belgian defense cooperation

During a meeting with his French counterpart, Minister of the Armed Forces Sébastien Lecornu, Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken emphasized the need for maximum economic return for Belgium within the CaMo (Capacité Motorisée) project. The two ministers agreed to soon conclude a political agreement that will include commitments on industrial cooperation and the role of Belgian defense companies.
Cooperation between the two countries' armies is progressing smoothly. Both nations remain committed to further strengthening this partnership, in the interest of their troops and joint operational effectiveness.
“The Franco-Belgian collaboration on motorized capabilities is crucial for the future of our land forces. At the same time, as Defense Minister, I remain vigilant about reinforcing our armed forces and supporting Belgium’s defense industry. During this meeting, I made it clear that ensuring a substantial economic return for Belgium is essential for the continued progress of the CaMo project,” said Theo Francken.
A partnership offering industrial and technological opportunities
Minister Francken had previously stressed the importance of strengthening the position of Belgian companies within European defense cooperation. His discussion with Minister Lecornu showed there is room to firmly anchor this concern in the upcoming agreement. “My talks with the French minister are taking place in a constructive spirit. There is mutual understanding that this partnership should not turn Belgium into a mere customer of France, but rather a true partner with its own industrial and technological opportunities. This is how we can reinforce each other. I am confident that together we can modernize our armed forces while also securing jobs and technological advancement in Belgium,” Francken concluded.
