Flemish Parliament condemns dramatic violence in Gaza

16 May 2018

Following in the footsteps of Flemish Minister-President Geert Bourgeois, the Flemish Parliament has also strongly condemned the violence at the border between Gaza and Israel. In an emergency resolution, the Parliament called on the EU to take on an active intermediary role to reach a two-state solution and a shared capital. The N-VA is of the opinion that it is high time for a durable and peaceful solution in which Hamas recognises the right of Israel to exist and in which Israel agrees to a two-state solution.

Independent investigation

At the end of 2015, the Flemish Parliament approved another resolution proposal that pushes the two-state solution to the fore. “With this new resolution, we are asking for respect for human rights and international law. There must be an international and impartial investigation aimed at demonstrating whether the various different parties have violated human rights and international law,” says the N-VA.

EU must take on intermediary role

In the resolution, the Parliament asks the European Union to take on an active intermediary role in order to reach a durable peace in the region. “Hamas bears an enormous responsibility by sending thousands of people, including children, to the border in droves. On the other hand, the shooting of tens of protesters by the Israeli army is totally unacceptable. The EU and in particular Federica Mogherini as the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy have a task to fulfil in this regard.”
