The three parties advocating independence from Catalonia together won a majority in the Catalan elections on Sunday 14 February. Flemish Minister-President Jan Jambon hopes that the future Catalan government will continue the dialogue with the Spanish government and find solutions to the conflict while respecting the popular will of the Catalans.

At the same time, Jan Jambon reiterates his concern about the fate of the Catalan political prisoners. He insists on their immediate release. “It is unacceptable for people to be thrown in jail because of their political beliefs and peaceful actions.”

“Europe, too, cannot continue to dismiss the demands of Catalans as merely an internal Spanish problem, especially when basic political rights are being violated. Europe must play its role as a mediator,” Jan Jambon concludes.
