Emergency shelter for homeless asylum seekers

1 February 2012

Over the last few freezing nights in Belgium 1,500 homeless people and asylum seekers have had to sleep under the open sky. This is scandalous, thinks the N-VA. Emergency shelter is an absolute necessity in the short term. But, if no long-term solution is found, providing an emergency bed is no better than putting a plaster on a wooden leg. The PS's open border policy means that a good 85 percent of asylum seekers end up being wrongly processed, and Belgium is still the welfare state of the world. State Secretary De Block (Open Vld) might well be the victim of the policy failings of the past, but her own party actually had a hand in developing the policy. On top of that, it is not an excuse for doing nothing now. Or will the PS block every attempt to introduce stricter asylum and migration regulations, as it did before?
