Defence supports France in the fight against wildfires

Belgium is deploying military personnel and specialised equipment to France to support the emergency services in combating the severe wildfires. A first contingent of 29 service members will depart on Wednesday. “France can count on our support. Our military personnel have the expertise and the resources needed to help protect lives, homes and valuable natural areas,” says Minister of Defence Theo Francken.

Rapid support for France

After France requested assistance, the Belgian Defence Forces made the necessary preparations.

Belgium is deploying, among other assets, two specialised Panther fire engines and nine water supply trucks. The mission is scheduled to last two weeks but may be extended or expanded if necessary. The support is being provided in close coordination with the French authorities and within the framework of European mutual assistance agreements.

Ready, professional and united

French President Emmanuel Macron described the wildfires as the worst since the Second World War. According to Minister Francken, this underlines the seriousness of the situation.

“When a friendly nation is confronted with such a severe crisis, we respond with actions, not words. I am proud that our people are once again demonstrating what Defence stands for: readiness, professionalism and solidarity. France needs our help, and we are providing it, just as we know we can always count on France when we need support,” Francken concludes.

The Belgian Defence Forces also remain fully operational at home. If necessary, the military will support the civil authorities and protect military sites.
